Geate News in NLE. Avid Media Composer is entering into a brand new era! The latest Avid Media Composer 2021 is taken into the next level with some highlights and new features. The native ProRes 422 support would be added into Avid Media Composer now. While the non-linear editor supports ProRes RAW, Media Composer currently only supports linking and playback of ProRes RAW media using the UME plug-in. Exporting ProRes RAW is not supported at this time. If you have ever worked with 4K ProRes 422 in Avid Media Composer, you would know the pain.
The first issue is that the luminance range is spread after the import in Avid Media Composer. Means that if you shoot with a Nikon Z9 and a Shogun to 16..255 what you can adjust in the camera, then you will end up with clipping of the highlights. Even 16..235 will be shown in the wrong luminance range. Second, ProRes 422 is not decoded as 10bit in Media Composer, what makes the whole processing of ProRes 422 senseless (since if somebody uses ProRes then he is not going for a typical consumer workflow). Third, Media Composer crashes when you import a certain number of Shoghun or Q7+ ProRes 422 files. On an old system the limit was about 20-25 files.
All together Avid Media Composer is not useful for a 4K ProRes 422 workflow up to now. But with the Avid Media Composer, you can expect to eliminate the pain. You never need to worry that the broadcasters that you deal with would like for you to deliver in a native 4K ProRes 422 format. You are also free to downloaded a bunch of Apple ProRes Quicktime 4K clips and get them to load and work in Avid Media Composer. However, if you are using Avid Media Composer 2019 and lower versions Avid Media Composer, 4K ProRes 422 is still the headache. The only way to edit 4K ProRes 22 in Avid Media Composer 2019 and lower version is still to transcode 4K ProRes 422 to DNxHD and other Avid Media Composer supported video. In addition, if your computer is low-end one, you’d better convert 4K ProRes 422 to DNxHD, too, even you are running the latest Avid Media Composer 2021.
